Malik Olafioye will leave for college later this month as one of the best Division 3-Class C boys hoopsters to ever come out of Metro Detroit. This past season, he averaged a glitzy 32 ppg. and was named the AP’s D3 Player of the Year.
Ecorse’s departing dazzling 6-foot-2 combo guard recently signed his National Letter of Intent with the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Olafioye was a showman and scoring machine who took Ecorse on back-to-back trips to the final four in East Lansing at the Breslin Center. He had over a dozen scholarship offers, including early bids from Houston, Georgetown, Boston College, Arizona State, Florida State, UAB, Rhode Island, UNLV and local schools Oakland University and U-D Mercy.
UMKC competes in the Summit League. Marvin Menzies got to UMKC last year after helming successful programs at New Mexico State and UNLV.
Olafioye poured in 25 points per game the past four seasons for Ecorse. In his final game in the prep ranks, he notched 22 points and 10 boards in Ecorse’s 64-54 loss to eventual state champion Beecher. He was a three-time Dream Team selection by both the Detroit Free Press and MLive.
