Top 15 Preseason Softball Players - Mercy's Sobczak tops list, Vieira of Clarkston is No. 2

  1. Alex Sobczak, 3B/C, Farmington Hills Mercy: A four-year starter at third base, Sobczak committed to Michigan during her sophomore year. She batted .613 last season with nine home runs and Sobczak had 36 walks, most were intentional. She had 17 home runs her sophomore season. Once Sobczak was walked intentionally with the bases loaded. She signed with U-M last November.

  2. Rachel Vieira, SS, Clarkston: Vieira was selected all-state the past two seasons. Last season she hit .500 with six home runs and 44 RBI. Vieira is not tall (5-foot-4) but she hits third in the lineup to make use of her power. In one game this season Vieira hit a grand slam and a 3-run home run. She signed with Central Michigan.

  3. Mackenzie Nemitz, SS, St. Clair Shores Lake Shore: A four-year starter, Nemitz signed with Michigan. Last season she batted .566. The leader of the team, Nemitz is awesome in the field. She’s especially adept at making the over-the-shoulder catch on short fly balls.

  4. Alex Sorgi, OF, Utica Ford: A left-hand hitter, Sorgi bats leadoff. A four-year starter in softball and basketball, Sorgi signed with Bowling Green. Sorgi owns school records for stolen bases in a season (53) and a career (138). Last season she batted .382 with 42 runs scored.

  5. Erika Underwood, 1B/C, Addison: Underwood is a powerful hitter, one that can hit the long ball at any time as shown by her 17-homer output in 2013. Underwood signed with Central Michigan.

  6. Kayla Laquiere, IF, Utica Eisenhower: A four-year starter, Laquiere batted .553 (68-128) last season with nine home runs. She had an on-base percentage of .596 and a slugging percentage of .919. “She’s a dynamic player who comes up big in the clutch,” coach Bob Hall said. Laquiere signed with Dayton.

  7. Miranda Greig 1B/P, St. Clair: Greig is a part of a strong lineup and she’s right in the middle of it. Greig will mainly play first base but is also part of an unusually deep pitching staff. Coach Kevin Mahn said Greig is dedicated to becoming a great hitter. Greig will attend Dartmouth in the fall.

  8. Brooke Wyman, SS/P, Portage Central: Wyman will be Central’s No. 1 pitcher this season but look for her to play shortstop in college. She signed with Western Michigan. Last season she hit .395. Wyman will hit third in the batting order this season.

  9. Kayla Noch, C, Romeo: Noch led Romeo to the Division 1 semifinals last season as she hit .438 with 29 RBI, 15 doubles and 23 runs scored. She signed with Central Michigan.

  10. Alyssa Heren OF/2B, Saline: A left-hand hitter, Heren uses her speed to turn an infield grounder into a base hit. She’s also excellent on defense. Heron will play more outfield in high school to satisfy the needs of the team but Heren will likely play infield in college. She signed with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

                                                                                                            

 

    11. Katie Alexander, C/P, Saline: Alexander is a strong hitter one is able to hit the double in the gaps as well as hitting over the fence. Alexander batted .637 last season with 73 RBI. She signed with Michigan.
