Quarterfinal picks: North plays South as the two Grosse Pointe public schools meet for the first time in a quarterfinalBaseball  |
Grosse Pointe – History will be made on Tuesday when Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South play in a Division 1 quarterfinal at Wayne State University at 1 p.m.
These rivals have played countless games, including six times this season, but this will be the first time they will play in a quarterfinal.
The main reason why they’ve never played this late in the tournament is they usually meet in the districts. The previous 13 seasons North and South have been placed in the same district. South defeated North last season on its way to the state final.
They’ve met just once in the regionals and that was in 2006. North won that game and went on to win the school’s second baseball title.
South coach Dan Griesbaum said the fact that both teams won regional titles is a testament to the level of play in the area and in the Macomb Area Conference. South competed in the Red Division this season, North in the White.
South (31-11) defeated Allen Park, 5-0, in a regional semifinal then bested U-D Jesuit 5-2 in the final.
