James Piot of Detroit CC continues to excel on the links

Royal Oak – James Piot has had quite a run the last 15 months.

Piot, 17, will be a senior this fall at Detroit Catholic Central and he’s established himself as one of the top junior players in the Midwest. He helped C.C. win back-to-back Division 1 titles the last two seasons. In 2015 he won the Michigan Junior Amateur held at Washtenew Country Club in Ypsilanti and he won the Golf Association of Michigan Junior Invitational held at Springs Meadows Country Club in Linden.

Also in 2015 he finished seventh at the Western Junior Amateur Championship and he’s back this week at the Western Junior that’s being held at Red Run Golf Club in Royal Oak.

Piot shot 3-under par 69 in Wednesday’s second round and is in the hunt once again as he sits at 2-under 142 five shots off the pace set by Sean Maruyama of Los Angeles.

Rounds 3 and 4 will be played Thursday and Piot will likely be in one of the final few pairings.

Piot said the difference between Tuesday’s round of 73 and Wednesday was hit putting. Playing conditions were more conducive to scoring on Wednesday because the wind, which was so prevalent on Tuesday, was minimal on Wednesday.

“I made more putts,” he said. “I hit the ball so well the wind didn’t bother me. The wind was OK. I’ve played in worse.

“The putter got it done today. I got it together late.”

Ten players from Michigan are in the field of 156. The cut line was 5-over par field was trimmed to 59 players.

Another player from Michigan who made the cut is Andrew Walker of Battle Creek who made it on the cut line.
