Wagner nets final goal, Crabrook Kingswood defeats Okemos 10-9 for Division 2 title

Troy-- Every kid dreams of taking the last shot in a big game to help win their team a championship.

John Wagner, a midfielder for Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood, got to call that dream a reality on Saturday.

Wagner’s goal in the final few seconds gave the Cranes a 10-9 victory over Okemos in the Division 2 final at Troy Athens on Saturday.

Cranbrook Kingswood led 6-4 over Okemos after three quarters and Wagner scored the first two goals of the fourth to Cranbrook Kingswood a 8-4 lead. With 7:45 left it seemed Cranbrook Kingswood was destined to walk away with their second state title in the last three years.

However, in less than a minute Okemos outscored Cranbrook Kingswood 3-1 to cut the deficit to 9-7.

Blake Grewal Turner scored for Okemos with 5:26 left off an assist by Charlie Ciuk to trim the deficit to one.

Okemos remained within one until Ciuk put one in the back of the net with 1:20 left and tied the game at 9-9 for the first time since there was 7:53 left in the second quarter.

With just under a minute left, Cranbrook Kingswood called a timeout to draw up a play for one last possession. According to head coach, Mat Wilson, the plan was simple.

“Give the ball to your best player and let him win it for you,” Wilson said.

Wagner started with the ball and held onto it until there was 15 seconds left to play. He made a strong move left, fired away and without even realizing the ball went in, buried his shot in the top right corner to give his team the lead with 10.5 seconds left to play and a state title.

“I was looking for my left to get my sweep over top, I knew the goalie was a righty and just tried to put it far side on him,” Wagner said. “To have the ball in my stick at the end of the game, you know I just wanted to put it in and get the win for the team.”
