Verska retires as coach at De La Salle, search for replacement begins

Here is a statement repleased by the Warren De La Salle offices in the aftermath of football coach Paul Verska's resignation as head coach.

Warren - Paul Verska, who led De La Salle Collegiate to three state finals, including the school’s first in 2014, has announced his retirement as head coach.

Verska informed his football team after De La Salle lost to Detroit East English Village Prep, 25-21, on Friday. He had informed school officials prior to the season of his retirement plans.

“It’s time,” said Coach Verska. “I’m looking forward to playing golf and enjoying my grandchildren. I’m happy to have the freedom to plan vacations, and have time with family without having to work around practices and game schedules.”  Coach Verska and his wife of 41 years, Kathy, have two children, Nick Verska (Meredith) and Kristen Lang (Mike), and three grandchildren, with another on the way.

One of the team’s captains, Senior Jordan Asbury said, “Paul Verska is a legend. I am so thankful and lucky to have played for him.”  

The winningest coach in De La Salle’s history, Coach Verska guided the Pilots to their first State Championship in 2014 with a 44-8 win over Muskegon Mona Shores. His Pilot teams were also finalists in 2006 and 2008, losing both games to Muskegon. In his 14 years as head coach, h
