MACOMB – Macomb Dakota bounced back from a season opening loss to pick up a convincing 42-21 win over Chippewa Valley on Saturday.

Holding onto a 7-0 lead after the game was postponed on Friday, Dakota continued its strong play into Saturday and led by as many as 28 points late in the game.

Dakota head coach Mike Gianonne said that picking up a win in week two was huge for the Cougars and added that his team faced a tall task after Chippewa Valley opened its season with a big win of its own.

“It’s a huge win for us, especially for us playing a rival,” he said. “It was a tough game for us coming off a loss to Clarkston last week and they had a lot of momentum coming in this week after beating Lake Orion.”

Daniel Crawford made six catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns, while Kaiser Carleton rushed for 90 yards on 19 carries and Maurice Moon threw for 185 yards and three touchdowns on 12-of-17 passing for the Dakota offense.

The big play of the game for the Cougars came late when Dimerti Abro intercepted a Chippewa Valley pass at the Dakota 1-yard line and proceeded to return the ball 99 yards for a touchdown to put Dakota on top 42-14 with seven minutes left to play.

“They (Chippewa Valley) were going in to score and they have some playmakers,” said Gianonne. “We stopped them on a couple run plays, and our defensive coordinator told the kids what they were going to do and Dimerti jumped the route. I didn’t think he could make it 99 yards, but he got into the end zone and it got our kids excited and they knew it was going to be a great game for us.”

Tyler Kulka and Kyler Muller connected for a pair of touchdowns in the second and third quarters to tie Dakota at 14-14, but Dakota rattled off 28 straight points to seal the win.

Auburn Hills Avondale 43, Hazel Park 6: Josh Holloman rushed for 160 yards on eight carries and found the end zone three times for Avondale. Chase Lalla led the Avondale defense with 16 tackles.
