STATE CHAMPS! ROUNDUP: Stoney Creek earns first ever win over Rochester Adams in season opener

ROCHESTER – After falling behind 14-0 to Rochester Adams early on Thursday, Stoney Creek stormed back to pick up a 28-20 win behind two touchdowns in the final six minutes in the season opener, the first win over Adams in school history for the Cougars.

Jack Allen’s touchdown run with 6:00 minutes left to play gave the Cougars their first lead of the night and the quarterback went on to score another touchdown late to put the game away.

“It’s a huge win for our program,” Stoney Creek head coach Brad Zube said. “We had Adams in week one, we have to play Oxford week two, and still the rest of OAA red to go. It’s just a huge win for us and a great way to set the tone for us.”

Allen finished the game with 102 yards passing and a touchdown and also rushed for 68 yards and two scores to pace the Stoney Creek offense.

Adams took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind touchdown runs from Clarence Broadnax and Kyle Wood.

Joe Platz scored to cut the deficit to 14-7 in the second quarter, but the Highlanders jumped ahead 20-6 before halftime after a 57 yard touchdown pass from Wood to Nick Antenucci.

Platz led the way defensively for the Cougars, tallying 11 solo tackles and four assisted tackles as well.

A touchdown pass from Allen to Scott Reader cut the Adams lead to 20-14 in the third.

 

Chippewa Valley 38, Lake Orion 35 – Tyler Kulka completed 20 of his 30 pass attempts for 274 yards, while Kyler Muller hauled in eight catches for 155 yards to lead Chippewa Valley (1-0). Lake Orion was led by Matt Krause, who 429 yards on 27 carries to pace the Dragons (0-1).

 

Farmington Hills Harrison 48, Farmington 12 – Jevon Shaw scored three touchdowns and rushed for 170 yards to lead the way for Harrison (1-0).

 

Canton 31, Holland West Ottawa 21 – Canton jumped out to an early two touchdown lead and held off West Ottawa on opening night. Caleb McNitt totaled over 200 yards of total offense and two touchdowns to lead the Chiefs.

 

Rockford 28, Utica Eisenhower 10 – Rockford got started early, scoring 14 points right out of the gate and extended its lead late to hold off Eisenhower for a season opening win. Landen Haney completed all 10 of his pass attempts for 80 yards two touchdowns. A field goal from Robert Smith and a touchdown pass from Jake Bradsher to Nick Ribbing accounted for the scoring for Eisenhower.

 

East Grand Rapids 17, Grand Rapids Catholic Central 14 – A Noah Salasky 25 yard field goal as time expired gave East Grand Rapids a season opening win over Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Thursday night. The Pioneers held a 14-0 lead early on after a fumble recovery in the end zone from Michael Johnston and then held off the Cougars, who stormed back to knot the game at 14-14.

 

Saginaw Swan Valley 42, Saginaw Nouvel 0 – Alex Grace rushed for 195 yards and four touchdowns, including a 95 yard touchdown scamper to lead the way for Swan Valley. Isaiah Berden made seven catches for 82 yards and a touchdown as well for Swan Valley.

 

Flint Carman-Ainsworth 26, Grand Blanc 14 – Tyler Minor accounted for three touchdown runs and finished with 133 yards rushing to lead Carman-Ainsworth and also picked off a pass to seal the win for the Cavaliers. Tre’Von Avery threw for 149 yards and rushed for 55 yards to lead Grand Blanc.
