STATE CHAMPS! Roundup: Muskegon outlasts Catholic Central in season opener

MUSKEGON – Muskegon quarterback Shawn Pfenning scored two touchdowns, while Alezay Coleman score the game winning touchdown with just 90 seconds left to play to give the Big Reds a 21-14 win over Detroit Catholic Central in the season opener for both teams.

Caleb Washington rushed for over 100 yards to help lead the Muskegon offense. For the Shamrocks, Joe Fanning scored on a touchdown run to give Catholic Central an early lead and later threw a 30 yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14-14 before Coleman’s touchdown run sealed the win for Muskegon.

 

Ithaca 38, Clare 13 – Ithaca extended its nation’s best winning streak to 57 games as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a comfortable halftime lead and never looked back. Jake Smith completed 16 of 23 passes for nearly 250 yards in his first start at quarterback for Ithaca. Spence DeMull tallied over 150 yards receiving on the day for Ithaca as well.

 

Walled Lake Northern 34, Bloomfield Hills 12 – A.J. Chuchla rushed for nearly 170 yards, 150 of which came in the second half, to lead the Northern offensive attack on Friday. Senior quarterback Brendan O’Donnell rushed for 149 yards as well for the Knights.

 

Birmingham Groves 42, Birmingham Seaholm 19 – Zach Van Faussien tossed three touchdown passes and Ernest Allen ran for over 200 yards and a pair of scores to lead the way for Groves.

 

Marine City 49, Algonac 28 – The Mariners grabbed a comfortable 28-0 lead after one quarter and raced out to a convincing win to kickoff their season. Jarrett Mathison rushed for a pair of touchdowns, while quarterback Alex Merchant accounted for four scores of his own for Marine City. Merchant finished the contest with 179 yards through the air.

 

Warren Mott 31, Detroit Cody 16 – Connor Madigan threw for 113 yards and Jayvon Wilson rushed for 90 yards to lead the offense for Mott.

 

Warren De La Salle 21, Toledo Central Catholic 14 – Allen Stritzinger rushed for over 100 yards and scored two touchdowns, including the game winner late in the fourth quarter for the Pilots. Tru Wilson also scored a touchdown for De La Salle.
