GIRLS BASKETBALL: Forest Park's Gussert tapped 2014 Miss Basketball-winner

DETROIT – Lexi Gussert’s already-fattened resume on the hardwood just got even more robust, as the Crystal Falls Forest Park girls hoop star was annointed the state’s Miss Basketball Wednesday.

At 6-foot-1 inches tall, Gussert can do everything.

She is averaging 29.5 points, 12 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game and recently broke the state’s all-time single-season record for 3s (101, 40-percent accuracy). Her career scoring mark currently stands at 2,593 points, fourth all-time in MHSAA history.

Her team wins a lot too.

Forest Park is a perfect 26-0 and will be squaring off with Athens in a Class D semifinal at the Breslin Center in East Lansing Thursday night.

It will be a return trip for Gussert.

A three-year all-state selection, as a sophomore she led Forest Park to the final four as well.

Committed to Michigan State, Gussert is the third straight future Spartan to walk away with the prestigious Miss Basketball trophy (Freeland’s Tori Jankoska last year and Central Lake’s Jasmine Hines two seasons ago) and second in the past three years to spawn from the small-school ranks (following in the footsteps of fellow Class D Blue-Chipper Hines).

“I’m incredibly thankful and honored” Gussert said. “It feels good to know all the hard work was rewarded. There’s still more to accomplish though and that’s going to East Lansing the next few days and getting a state title.”

Midland’s Jessica Walter, Three Rivers’ Teagen Reeves and Birmingham Detroit Country Day’s Asia Doss finished second, third and fourth respectively in the voting.
