X-Factors to watch for in the Division 1 Football Semifinals

With the MHSAA Football Semifinals taking place over the weekend, here are four X-Factors to keep an eye on for Saturday:

Jack Morris – Detroit Catholic Central

Morris is an impact player on both sides of the ball, playing both defensive end and tight end for the Shamrocks and has proven to be a key player for Catholic Central all season long. Morris was a factor on offense and defense in Saturday’s regional final win over Grandville and should be able to make a difference this Saturday against Romeo. Morris has been a key part of the Shamrock passing attack and expect him to be a key part of Catholic Central’s passing attack this weekend.

Kade Messner – Romeo

Messner plays both running back and defensive back for the Bulldogs and could be leaned on heavily on Saturday afternoon. Messner and the Romeo rushing attack will need to find success early and often to keep the Catholic Central defense on the field and keeping its offense on the sidelines. Messner could also play a big role on defense and trying to limit what the Shamrocks are able to accomplish in the passing game as well.

DeAndre Square – Detroit Cass Tech

With Eisenhower’s offense firing on all cylinders so far this postseason, scoring no fewer than 42 points in any of its three playoff games, the Technician defense will have another tough test after a narrow win over Saline last week. Look for Square to play a key role in trying to limit big play opportunities for Eisenhower quarterback Max Wittwer and running back Jack Provencher.

Max Wittwer – Utica Eisenhower

Wittwer has been the definition of a winner since taking over as the starting quarterback for the Eagles last year and will need to make some big time plays if Eisenhower wants to make it to Ford Field. As we’ve seen all season long, Cass Tech is more than capable of putting points on the board, regardless of who it has faced this year and Wittwer will need to manage to find some success against a talented Cass Tech defense.
