The Drive For Five - Five under the radar teams in Class A that could make a run to the Breslin CenterBasketball  |
1. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s
By just going off their bracket, the Eaglets have a better than good chance to advance to the Breslin Center as long as they’re able to get past West Bloomfield in Friday’s District Final. Led by C.J. Wilson and Caden Prieskorn, St. Mary’s could be the surprise team that makes it to the Breslin Center.
Romulus is probably a year away from making a serious run, but as the season’s gone on, the Eagles have proven to be a dangerous team. A strong finish to the year, which includes a win over Kalamazoo Central in the regular season finale, Romulus is a team that can make some noise in the state tournament and could make a deep run, but faces a tough game against Wayne Memorial in the district final on Friday.
3. Detroit Cass Tech
Depth is key for the Technicians and while they have an extremely difficult path to the Breslin Center, which began with Wednesday’s win over East English Village and next is Detroit King and defending Class A state champion Detroit U-D Jesuit will likely be waiting in the regional round. But with strong depth throughout its roster could help the Technicians make a run to East Lansing.
Much like Romulus, Belleville could be a year away from making a deep run, but the Tigers remain as dangerous as any team on this list with the help of Gabe Brown and Davion Williams. If Belleville can get past Wayne Memorial, the Tigers will be a team that can pull an upset or two on a potential run to the Breslin Center.
5. Detroit King
The Crusaders have a district final showdown with rival Cass Tech (See above), but if they can survive and advance, King has enough experience to make a run. However, just like their rival, the Crusaders will likely need to come away with a sizable upset in the regionals against the defending champs in order to make it to the Breslin.Tweet
